Lake PET Imaging Center

PET/CT imaging is the most advanced diagnostic tool available today for the detection and monitoring of cancer and brain disorders, especially in their earliest stages. In fact, PET/CT imaging can detect abnormal growth before the abnormal structure (tumor) is noticeable on a standard CT (computerized tomography) scan. And that's good news for patients, because earlier detection often means simpler treatments, better outcomes and healthier lives.

Using signal-emitting "tracers" that are introduced into the body by simple injection, the PET scan produces unique internal images that can be used to:

• Pinpoint the source of many of the most common cancers and selected brain diseases;
• Determine how far the disease has spread or if treatment is working; and
• Produce valuable information that can be used to shape radiation treatment programs.

PET/CT imaging is a non-invasive procedure, usually done on an outpatient basis like a normal x-ray, CT scan or MRI. However, while these technologies can reveal physical changes caused by disease in organs, PET/CT actually measures metabolic activity to determine whether organs are working properly.

PET/CT scans determine whether malignant tumors are present anywhere in the body, which is extremely helpful when the disease was previously undetected or is currently being treated. In the case of cancers under treatment, abnormal re-growths can often be hidden by the scar tissue that results from surgery, radiation and/or chemotherapy -- but the PET scan can reveal them.

Does PET Scanning replace CT Scanning? No.
A CT scan produces a highly detailed image of a patient's anatomy, giving doctors a better "roadmap" for locating and treating tumors. Plus, it detects certain tumors better than PET. That's why the Lake PET Imaging Center uses a PET/CT scanner, which acquires both images at the same time in precise alignment. A PET/CT scan can be used to target radiation and biopsies or plan surgery, and it is over 90% accurate in detecting cancers of the lung, head and neck, esophagus, colon, lymph glands and several other rapidly growing tumors.

The PET Imaging Center operates under the guidance of board-certified nuclear medicine physicians and radiologists. The staff has board-certified technologists and physicians trained and experienced in PET/CT scanning and analysis.

SPECT-CT Scanner
PET Imaging Center's single photon emission computed tomography combined with X-ray computed tomography (SPECT-CT) scanner allows us to view nuclear medicine studies with unmatched clarity and accuracy. For example, traditional bone scans can show inconclusive findings that previously required additional X-rays. The SPECT-CT scanner eliminates this by obtaining a radiographic CT image at the same time at no extra cost, saving both time and money.

Preparing for your PET scan

Please let your doctor know:

• about any medication you are taking,
• if you are diabetic, and
• if you are pregnant or nursing.

Unless directed otherwise by your doctor:

• You should have nothing by mouth except for water or medications four hours prior to the appointment.
• If possible, diabetic patients should have their fingerstick blood sugar under control (< 200mg/dl.)
• You should not exercise vigorously two days prior to the scan.
• Patients for a radiation therapy planning scan should bring their immobilization devices with them.
• Wear loose, warm, comfortable clothing. Depending on the extent of your PET scan, you may be asked to wear a hospital gown during your procedure.
