Cancer Program Earns Three-Year Approval with Commendation 07/09/2008
The Cancer Program of Our Lady of the Lake and Mary Bird
Perkins recently earned a three-year approval with commendation from the
American College of Surgeons (ACoS) Commission on Cancer (CoC). Only 25% of all
cancer programs across the United States and Puerto Rico earn this approval.
Approval is given only to those facilities that have voluntarily committed to
provide the highest level of quality cancer care and undergo a rigorous
evaluation process. After an on-site visit by a physician surveyor, the Cancer
Program of Our Lady of the Lake and Mary Bird Perkins had zero deficiencies and
earned approval with eleven total commendations in the following areas:
Outcomes analysis
Abstracting timeframe
Quality of NCDB data submission
Clinical trial accrual
Prevention and early detection
Cancer-related improvements
“This accreditation is a direct reflection of our commitment and dedication
to providing the best and most comprehensive cancer care to this community,”
said Kevin Guidry, OLOL Cancer Center Administrator.
“The Cancer Program of Our Lake of the Lake and Mary Bird Perkins has
voluntarily sought a rigorous evaluation by the Commission on Cancer of the
American College of Surgeons and has met the high standards established and
demanded by the College,” said Todd Stevens, president and CEO of Mary Bird
Perkins Cancer Center. “This stamp of approval assures the residents of
southeast Louisiana that we are jointly committed to providing the highest level
of cancer care right here in the local community.”
Receiving care from an approved cancer program ensures that the patient will
have access to: comprehensive care; a multispecialty team approach to cancer
care; information about clinical trials and new treatment options; access to
cancer-related information, education and support; a cancer registry that
collects data on type and stage of cancers and treatment results and offers
lifelong patient follow-up; ongoing monitoring and improvement of care and
quality care close to home.
The Commission on Cancer is dedicated to improving survival rates and quality
of life for cancer patients through standard-setting, prevention, research,
education and the monitoring of comprehensive quality care.
The Cancer Program of Our Lady of the Lake and Mary Bird Perkins is one of
only 14 sites in the country selected to participate in the National Cancer
Institute (NCI) Community Cancer Centers Program (NCCCP) pilot. Competing with
renowned cancer centers across the nation, our program was chosen because of its
proven medical leadership, phenomenal community outreach and experience in
conducting clinical trials. Learn more about how we are helping create the model
