Above all the negative chatter regarding our health care issues, I want to recognize and offer my heartfelt praise to the men and women who staff the cardiac intensive care unit at Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center in Baton Rouge.
My husband of 28 years fell on May 21, broke his hip and was admitted to OLOL for a total hip replacement. The surgery in itself is routine in today’s world, but to a patient with a critical medical history (heart disease, diabetes, renal issues etc.) it becomes a critical surgical procedure with many risk factors.
The surgery was a success (many thanks to Dr. Robert W. Easton) but even with the post-op treatment plan, medical problems arose quickly and he was admitted to the cardiac intensive care unit, where he remained for more than two weeks. His condition was extremely critical and the staff of CICU stepped in and put all their medical training in motion.
My family and I were kept abreast of every aspect of his care, offered reports from the night staff, met with each nurse, doctor and certified nursing assistant on a daily basis. Each of them not only cared for my husband with their excellence in health care, but they cared for my family in the same professional manner, making themselves available to take and answer our numerous questions, addressed our concerns and helped ease our fears.
Under their care, my husband improved and was able to progress to the next level of care. We have since lost our beloved husband, father and brother, but the staff of CICU continues to offer the highest quality of critical care to each and every patient sent to their area.
Their passion for the work they do was present with each step taken to heal our loved one! May God bless each and every one of them, they are very special people, offering very special care to those requiring their health care expertise, and we were very grateful to have had them care for our loved one.
